The precursor of the Crafter was the LT. As the was configured, VW really wanted to save resources and cooperate with Mercedes. Mercedes did not want that. On the occasion of the second series of the LT, Mercedes wanted then nevertheless. Now therefore, quite reasonable, Sprinter and Crafter are produced on a common base frame in Dusseldorf and Ludwigsfelde (Berlin). Even the Achleitner all-wheel drive is available for both. However, Daimler has recently stated to want to terminate the cooperation 2016.
What has changed with the facelift? Externally, not much. The radiator grille's enough of a spotlight to another. For this is added thereunder a facing in body colour over the entire width. Whether this is done because the Crafter anyway often impacts higher than wide, in order to give it something more optically width. Or one wanted oneself more differentiate from the Ford Transit (Figure 11), because the two are still very similar. The significant difference to the Crafter Model 2006 can be seen on figure 10.
The engines again have something less geometric compression, obviously more boost pressure and all increased significantly in torque. There are two types of charging, the VTG supercharger and the Biturbo, the latter being probably able to keep equal the CO2 emission despite the higher engine power. With the help of the Biturbo it has decreased compared to the predecessor.
The possible recuperation and the start-stop automatic also contribute for more economical use of fuel. What is new is that the latter only stops the engine for safety reasons, when the door is closed and the seat belt is worn. Not only on the gearbox there is now the possibility of the auxiliary drive system, but also on the engine. The console with connection of the belt drive is already prepared.
What secretly and quietly changed on new cars is the cooling system. An extra pump operates the cooling system for the exhaust gas recirculation. While it always remains in operation, two counter-switching valves ensure that this additional system during warm up only coolant exchanges with the engine cooling and then how these flows through the normal cooler.
Also the interior heater is no longer operated with from the main coolant pump but probably belatedly switched on, in order to let first the engine the necessary heat. Interesting, the new non-return valves, which prevent a too strong coolant flow through the compensating tank and facilitate the vent. That's what happens when you divide the cooling system and for good reason wants to maintain a single compensating tank. This creates problems, if even only one from both is installed wrong. 09/13
